Rich Inner Life

I was just in town for a couple of weeks,
and walking down the sidewalk,
I saw a guy with a briefcase
and he looked a whole lot different than anybody back home,
and my friends said he's a big shot in this city,
and I thought,
wow! Looking like that!

"He's a credit to his race", I said, "he's a credit to his race.
There aren't a lot of people with a race like his
who can do what he does, who can be what he is."

And he stopped, right there in the street!
and he looked at me for a moment,
admiringly, I thought,
and said,

"You know, you must have a rich inner life.
A rich inner life."

The next night my friends took me to a place
where there was a lot of women dancing and singing.
But I looked at the poster real close, and they
wasn't really women, they was men!
Men dressed up like women!
But I got a open mind, so I went in with my friends.
And I watched awhile, and the music went way down low,
and another one came out, and started to sing, and I said,
"You're a credit to your sexual orientation", I said,

"A credit to your sexual orientation.
There's not a lot of people with a sexual orientation like yours
who can do what you do, wearing all those hot furs"

And she stopped singing,
and walked over to where I was sitting
and took the drink out of my hand,
and set it on the table,
and she sat on my lap
with this coat,
and this slinky red dress
with all these long sequins,
and she slipped one gloved hand
around the back of my neck,
and holding the microphone
between three fingers,
she lifted it to her lips,
and whispered,

"You know, you must have
a rich inner life.
A rich inner life."

So I went back to the mechanic
to pick up my truck after they fixed the transmission,
which I kind of blew driving out here
and I got there just as this cute blond was
sliding out from under my truck and saying

"It looks OK. Should run fine now."

And I said wow, a blonde! A blonde mechanic!

"She's a credit to her gender", I said,
"a credit to her gender.
There aren't a lot of people with a gender like hers
who can do what she does,
it so often deters."

And she looked at me for a moment,
and she said,
"What are you, nuts?"
And I said,
"No, I just got a rich inner life.
A rich inner life."
